FOMO3D was a self-aware Ponzi game on Ethereum where buying 'keys' extended a countdown timer, and the last keyholder when the timer hit zero won the pot. The first round accumulated 10,469 ETH (~$3 million). One player studied competitors' automated bots, waited for low human activity, bought a key, then spammed the Ethereum blockchain with high-gas transactions to prevent anyone else from getting key purchases through before the timer expired. The winner spent an estimated $12,000-$14,000 in gas fees to win $3 million. Developers called it 'absolutely out fucking skilled.' The exploit demonstrated novel blockchain-level game theory.
