Tornado Cash Sanctions Begin

n August 2022, authorities escalated enforcement against Tornado Cash after U.S. sanctions, leading to the arrest of developer Alexey Pertsev in the Netherlands. The crackdown intensified in 2023 when U.S. prosecutors charged Roman Storm. The original OFAC sanctions on Tornado Cash were challenged and partially overturned by a U.S. appeals court in late 2024 (ruling that autonomous protocols can't be sanctioned as 'property'). Sanctions were lifted in March 2025, but the criminal case against Storm continues.
